Completion
Completion Overview
Working on the game's completion list is something that can give you something to do during your "free time" between story parts. Below gives an overview of the 9 completion elements in the in-game Completion screen on the pause menu. Going into each section in the completion menu will give you more details. For example, with the restaurant completion you will see the names of the restaurants in game and can see how many items there are in each restaurant you need to order to get 100%. None of this has anything to do with the main story, however you do get rewards for completing each section which will prove useful when playing through the game. It will not be an easy task to get 100% on everything here, but it's worth trying to complete as much as you can so you can benefit from the rewards. You can work through the completion list in the premium adventure mode, but be warned that your completion progress doesn't carry over into this mode, so you'll be starting over.
Completion List Components
Restaurants

This consists of 71 food/drink items from 8 restaurants. For food/drink items that can be ordered at multiple restaurants, ordering it at one counts towards the completion of those other restaurants. You get the Gods of Fortune Sarashi equipment for completing this category.
Storage Lockers

To complete this section, you must find all 50 storage keys and open the lockers. You get the Lucky Beads equipment item for completing this section, which is an extremely useful item as wearing it will prevent random encounters. In addition to that, you also receive the 50 items found within the lockers.
Arena

You must defeat all 50 fighters in the arena at least one time to complete this section. There are some fighters who will only appear in the arena when certain conditions have been met. Check the arena section of this guide for details. You get the Ganryu Wooden Sword weapon as a reward for completing this section.
Heat Actions

You must perform all 56 heat actions on this list to complete this section. It's not enough to learn all the heat actions, you must also perform them in battle. After completing this list, you are able to learn the Deathblow - Avidya Wasteland ability. However, you won't be able to do so on your first playthrough - you must start a new game from your clear save data (New Game Plus) or load your clear save data in premium adventure mode.
Abilities

You must learn all 60 abilities to complete this section. This does include the heat actions you can learn, but you don't need to perform them to complete this section. You get the Peerless Sword weapon as a reward for completing this section.
Weapons

You must obtain all 227 weapons to complete this section. This includes enhanced versions of weapons you obtain through refining them at the blacksmith. You don't need to keep that weapon for it to count on this list - as long as you obtained it at least one time, it counts on your completion list even if you later sell it. You receive the Dragon Armour as a reward for completing this section.
Yujo

You must max out the heart gauges on all 7 yujo and complete their substories (and receive their final letter after that) to complete this section. It's simple enough to increase the heart gauge through dialogue options, but the mini-games you have to play can be difficult. You receive the Immortal Turtle as a reward for completing this section.
Inventions

You must help the inventory, Gyotensai, to invent all 21 items to complete this section. You receive the Cat Shoes equipment as a reward for completing this section.
Mini-Games

You must complete all the mini-games in the game (including the training-related mini-games) to complete this section. Completing a few of these shouldn't be too much of a problem, but getting 100% on everything here is no simple feat. You receive the Runner's Shoes equipment as a reward for completing this section.
Request, Commission, and Bounty Completion
These aren't included on the completions list in this game, but you still get rewards for completing this. Of course, you receive various rewards for completing each request, commission and bounty, but if you complete all 100 requests, all 20 commissions, and all 20 bounties, you receive the Matchless Wakizashi weapon as a reward. You need to be careful though - it is possible to lock yourself out of completing this during the game, preventing you from getting 100%.

In the case of bounties, the posters contain details such as the wanted man's face, the reward you get, where you can find him, and the time of day when he'll show up.
Timings and Conditions
All substories in this game have specific timings and conditions to make them trigger. For example, during the main story more substories will gradually become available as you progress through the game and cannot be completed earlier. In addition to story progress, there are other conditions that sometimes need to be met before you can trigger a substory. If you don't want to miss out on any of these substories, use the substory section on this guide to familiarise yourself with the trigger requirements.

The are a few multi-part requests in this game. To unlock part 2, for example, you must first complete part 1.
Substories With Dialogue Options
Some substories include the ability to select responses from a few dialogue options. The responses you select can affect the outcome of the substory. Generally (but not always) getting the "Completed" (as opposed to "Finished") outcome gives the greater reward and experience, so you should aim for that result.

Sometimes selecting the options that results in a "Finished" outcome rather than "Completed" can give you some funny moments. If you want to see the different outcomes, you should save before attempting the substory.
Keep Backup Saves
To ensure you don't miss out on anything, it's a good idea to have some backup saves so you can go back to an earlier point in the story if necessary. A couple of particuarly useful backup points would be 11-2, just before heading out to Yagyu Village, and 12-3, just before talking to Ito. In a lot of cases, you may not need to go back to an earlier save, as long as you are able to trigger the substory (i.e. you are at the right time of day for it), the substories that became available earlier on in the story can still be completed later in the game.

Once you speak to Ito in 12-3 you cannot return to Gion for the rest of the game. Make sure you've completed everything you can in there before you leave.
You can still achieve completion if you get a "Finished" result
There are 2 possible results when a substory ends - "Completed" and "Finished". Even if you get "Finished" results rather than "Completed", you can still complete this section and get the Matchless Wakizashi reward. Getting "Finished" results doesn't affect unlocking the final request, "Justice For All" (request 100). As long as you have either "Finished" or "Completed" all the other substories, you don't have to worry about being locked out of that. So don't feel like you have to reload a save if you get a "Finished" result.

Technically it is possible to finish a commission with less favourable outcomes, meaning it would be a "Finished" result rather than "Completed". However, all the commissions simply display a "Resolved" result on the commissions menu, regardless of the outcome.
Premium Adventure Mode
In premium adventure mode, you can experience all the substories in the game without having to worry about story progression. In other words, all the substories are available right away (with the obvious exception of those that require other substories to be completed before becoming available). If you aren't able to complete the substories during the main story, you can always complete them here without restrictions. Note that all other trigger conditions remain the same (e.g. can only be triggered at a certain time of day).

Your substory completion will not carry over to New Game Plus or Premium Adventure. In other words, you will have to start from scratch with the substories. However, if you did complete any substories during the main story, completing them again here will get you the reward again.
