Mini-Games
Mini-Games Introduction
Mini-Games are playspots you can enjoy in the game, which are not related to the main story at all - just something you can enjoy on the side. There is a section on the completion screen for mini-games. There are 16 items on this list in total, including the training mini-games like horse archery and the waterfall training. The requirements for completing each mini-game can be seen in this section. When you meet the requirement, the text will display in red, indicating the mini-game is completed.
Mini-Games Types and Locations
There are 11 types of mini-game (not including the 5 training mini-games), as indicated on the table. With the exception of the "Star Actor" mini-game, which can only be played at night time, all mini-games can be played at any time of the day. The aforementioned "Star Actor" mini-game becomes available in 6-1, while the rest of the mini-games are available from chapter 5. There are 4 types of mini-game played at the brothels - Bottle Knockdown (Bowling), Konpira Fune Fune, Iroha Karuta, and Fan Toss. The first two are played at Yumejira, while the last 2 are played at Azamiya. After completing Asagiri (max hearts and completed request), you can play all 4 of those games with her.
Bear in mind that from 12-4 you are no longer able to visit Gion - so if you want to complete the mini-games you'll need to do so before that point in the story.

Brothels
There are 4 mini-games you can play at the brothels in Gion. In order to play one of the games with a yujo, you must first get their hearts gauge up to a certain amount. When you do get a play with a yujo, you will play either Bottle Knockdown or Konpira Fune Fune at Yumejiya, and either Iroha Karuta or Fan Toss at Azamiya.
For full details, see the yujo section of this guide.
The Yujo
Kiryu can visit two brothels - Yumejiya and Azamiya. There are 7 yujo to visit in total across those 2 brothels. You cannot visit Asagiri until you have completed all 6 of the other yujo first.

Visiting a Yujo
The table here shows the general flow of a yujo visit. However, you cannot offer a gift to the yujo on your first visit to her. You can only do so from the second visit onwards. Depending on what you say during the dialogue options with the yujo, her heart gauge can go up or down. When you get it up to a certain amount, you are able to play a mini-game with her.
A typical yujo visit
[1] Enter brothel, choose a yujo, offer her a gift |
[2] Order a drink, order food, 3x conversation options |
[3] Extension (2nd visit onward), repeat step 2 again |
[4] Pay the total fee (visit fee plus food/drink fees) |
Raising the heart gauge
To raise the heart gauge, you must select dialogue options that she will like and order food/drink that she enjoys. In conversations, you get 3 dialogue options to choose a response. Of those 3 options, there is always at least one that will increase the heart gauge. In addition to food/drink orders and dialogue options, the equipment Kiryu is wearing also has an effect on the heart gauge. You can also offer gifts to increase the heart gauge.

When presented with a dialogue option, you must choose the most appropriate response to that particular yujo, taking their personality into account.
Yujo Mini-Games
This section looks at the 4 types of mini-games you can play with the yujo. When you play a mini-game, you have the option to practice before competing properly, which is a good opportunity to get the hang of it. One you have "completed" a yujo (finished her request and received her final letter), you can freely play a mini-game with her when you select her again at the brothel. As stated previously, you can only play all 4 of these mini-games with Asagiri. Only 2 are available for the others.
The 4 Yujo Mini-Games
Konpira Fune Fune

This game consists of placing/removing a small object known as a "hakama" onto a table. If the hakama is not there, you must press . If it is there, you can press either or . If you press you will pick it up. However, you may only keep hold of it for 2 more turns. On your third turn, you must place it back down again with the button.
Bottle Knockdown

This works exactly like bowling. 10 bottles are lined up at the end of a bowling lane and you throw a ball towards them to knock them down. You can select balls of varying weights and apply spin to your throws. This is a simpler mini-game than the Konpira Fune Fune one so should be more straightforward to win.
Fan Toss

A game in which you throw a fan at an object known as a "butterfly" sat on a small table. The size of the table, and that of the butterfly, can vary. Depending on your throw, you can earn anywhere from 0 to 3 points. Both Kiryu and the yujo get 5 throws each. The one with the most points after those 5 throws is the winner.
Iroha Karuta

A game in which you must pick out a card which corresponds to the phrase being read out by the reader (first syllable of the phrase is indicated as a hiragana character on the corresponding card). But once you learn the pictures you don't need to worry about the hiragana. Only a handful of the cards can be seen on screen at one time, so the secret to success here is to learn where the cards are on the table, to save time having to find exactly where it is.
Developing Intimacy
When you get a yujo's heart gauge up to 6 hearts, you can play a mini-game with her. If you win that mini-game, the max hearts on the gauge goes up to 15 hearts. If you lose the mini-game, you must again get the heart gauge up to at least 6 hearts and challenge her again. You must win the mini-game to increase the max heart gauge. When you get the heart gauge to 11 hearts, you have a date event with her. If that goes well, the max hearts on the gauge will go up to 20 hearts. When you get the gauge up to 16 hearts, you again play a mini-game with her. Once you have won this game, and got the heart gauge to 20 hearts, you will trigger the yujo's request.

If your date with the yujo goes well, you will automatically re-enter the brothel and spend more time with her. You do not have to pay a visit fee for this, however you will still pay for any food/drink you order.
Gambling Mini-Games
This section looks at the 4 gambling mini-games in this game. All 4 can be played at the gambling den in Gion. Cee-Lo and Hanafuda can also be played in Rakugai. The wooden tags used for these mini-games are shared between Gion and Rakugai. So if you buy tags in Gion, you don't need to buy them in Rakugai. The prize exchange is the same too, so if you have enough tags you can exchange them for items at either location.

There is one prize exchange location in Gion and 2 in Rakugai. The prizes and cost are the same at all locations.
Odds and Evens
A mini-game in which a dice roller rolls 2 dice and you guess whether the combined total is an even number or an odd number. The amount of tags you can bet increases based on the number of times you play the mini-game and how far into the story you are. New ways to gamble in this mini-game become available as you play - one after 5 rounds, one after 15 rounds, and one after 25 rounds. After 25 rounds you get the opportunity to duel, one on one, with the dice roller. Full details can be found on its own section of this guide.

During the duels with the dice roller, he sometimes will try to swindle you. Press the right button when it appears on screen to catch him in the act.
Cee-Lo
A mini-game in which 4 players (including Kiryu) cast 3 dice into a bowl. When two of the dice are the same number, the number on the remaining die becomes the players score. 6 is the best score, 1 is the worst. There are also special rolls - rolling 3 of the same number, rolling a 1,2,3, and rolling a 4,5,6. One player acts as the "parent" while the other 3 are the "children". The children compete against the parent. The role of the parent rotates each round. Full details can be found on its own section of this guide.

Using cheat items like the Pinzoro Dice is useful when you are the parent and the 3 children have lots of points.
Hanafuda
This is a game known as "Koi Koi", played using Hanafuda cards. Kiryu competes against a single opponent for card combinations, called "yaku", which earn points. The winner is the player with the most points after all the rounds have been played. When you get a yaku, you can declare "koi" (hence the name of the game) to continue playing for potentially more yaku and build up your score. However, if your opponent scores a yaku and either ends the round there, or continues and you fail to score a yaku, then you don't gain any points. More details can be found on its own section of the site

The Tsukimizake and Hanamizake yaku are relatively easy to get and both earn you 5 points. It's always a good strategy to aim for those combos.
Turtle Racing
A mini-game in which 5 turtles race against each other. Turtles have 3 attributes - Stamina, Speed, and Hunger. In addition, they have 3 environment skills - Water, Sand, and Mud, which determine their ability to travel on those terrains on a race track. They also have a "condition" stat which affects performance. It is also possible to make your own turtle(s) compete in the races. See below for turtle nurturing details.

You can check on the stats of the turtles before you place a bet and use that data to your advantage (e.g. bet on turtles in better condition and on a winning streak). This obviously doesn't guarantee you'll bet correctly, but it's useful for making an educated gamble.
Turtle Nurturing
Below outlines the steps involved in the process from finding a turtle to entering that turtle in a race. If the turtle stops during the race, or you want a speed boost from it, you can press the button to encourage it. You have to pay a participation fee when you enter a turtle, but if your turtle wins you will get more money back than what you paid. If you also bet on your own turtle to win you'll get even more money on top of that. If you are able to raise a top-class turtle, the racing mini-game can be a good way of making money.
From getting a turtle to participating in a race
[1] Get a Turtle

You can find turtles spread out in locations all over the game, including Gion and Rakugai. You can also buy turtles from the turtle seller in Rakugai. You can find turtle location information on its own section on the Turtles page of this guide.
[2] Feed Turtle

You keep your turtles in the Turtle Tub found in Kiryu's house in Gion. Besides the turtle food you can buy from the Turtle Seller, you are able to feed turtles all kinds of food. Different food will yield different effects, such as improvements to the turtle's attributes and other stats. See the Turtle Food section of this guide for full details.
[3] Get Turtle Appraised

The turtle expert can be found in Nakanokura in Gion. He charges a 10 Mon fee, but having your turtle appraised can result in positive effects so it's worth doing. Even if your turtle gets a low appraisal rating at first, with nurturing the turtle can end up having a higher rating.
[4] Race Turtle

You can enter the turtles you nurture in races. If the payout is 1.1x, there is a high chance your turtle will win. For higher payouts, you might want to save before competing to be safe. Always keep an eye on your turtle's stamina and condition, as your turtle will get tired as it competes in races.
Other Mini-Games
This section looks at 3 mini-games you can play that aren't one of the brothel or gambling mini-games. Two of those are mahjong and shogi, which are featured in other RGG games and follow the same rules. The "Star Actor" mini-game is unique to this game. It is also the only mini-game in this game which is time-restricted - you can only play it at night. In order to freely play this mini-game, you must first complete request 32. You just have to speak to the guy in front of the kabuki theatre in Rakugai (top-right of map) to play.
Shogi
Shogi can be played in both Gion and Rakugai. However, the way it is played differs between the two locations. In Gion, you play the "Trial Exercises", of which there are 10 exercises. You must complete these exercises in order. For more details about these exercises, see the shogi section of this guide. But basically, each exercise has a specific set up or specific rules. On the other hand, in Rakugai you play regular shogi, using the standard rules. As you win games in Rakugai, your shogi rank will improve. You start off at 10th rank, then eventually go up to 1st rank. Beyond that, you go into the "dan" ranks (like in karate), starting from 1st dan and going up to 10th dan. The final rank beyond 10th dan is "Shogi King".

Once you get to trial 5 in Gion, or 5th rank in Rakugai, it starts getting pretty difficult. Even experiences players might start struggling in these higher levels.
Mahjong
Mahjong can be played in both Gion and Rakugai. If you're just playing this for completion purposes, it's a lot more straightforward to complete the mahjong component than the shogi one. However, the 50000 point requirement for mahjong completion is not cumulative - you must finish with that many points in a single session. See the mahjong section of this guide for more details.

You can adjust some of the rules in mahjong. One of those rules, "Game Mode", can be set to "half-game", which is the longer mode and therefore makes it easier to gain enough points for completion. The other mode "East Wind", is a shorter game mode, so it will be harder to gain enough points.
Star Actor
A mini-game in which you fight enemies on a stage. You must defeat enemies within the 2 minute time limit to earn the favour of the audience, who will throw money onto the stage in appreciation. The goal is to make as much money as possible within those 2 minutes. Note that there is a specific heat action than can only be used in this mini-game, so remember to use that when you play this game.
You are forced to use an umbrella weapon for this mini-game and you cannot change equipment (including going to the brawler style) while playing this. You are also not able to use any kind of item in this mini-game, so you can't use frenzy pills to build up your heat gauge. See the star actor section of this guide for more details.

To do the unique heat action, get Kiryu into heat mode, then wait for an enemy to attack (this is a counter heat action). Doing this will get you a lot of money from the crowd.
